If there’s one switch that we would love for you to make this Spring, it’s trying to have better sleep. Actually, it’s trying to have phenomenal sleep.
Getting decent shut-eye isn’t all about beauty (though that certainly is a bonus). It’s been shown time and time again that sleep quality and length is linked to both mental and physical health. Not only will you be doing future you a favour by protecting your nighttimes, but you’re bound to feel better as you go about your busy day-to-day.
We understand that in the modern world that’s easier said than done though. So here are Team Verdant Alchemy’s tips for making good quality sleep fall in love with you.
Blue light glasses. Daily
Don’t worry, we’re not going to tell you to avoid screens five hours before bed. We know that phones, laptops and tablets are a massive part of most modern lives.
Here’s the perfect compromise: Blue light glasses. These help to filter out the blue light that screens emit, which can put your brain into a perpetual state of alertness. By using them, you’ll help to calm the mind, which naturally means improved sleep quality.

Plus, don’t forget that most smart phones offer the option to adjust your screen colours away from blue light and towards a more orange hue. This can be an absolute game changer for better sleep. And it’s free!
Invest in a weighted blanket
Used to combat the symptoms of everything from PTSD and sleep disorders to more generalised stress, weighted blankets are a brilliant tool if you find yourself tossing and turning each night. Whether you’re mentally writing your to-do list for tomorrow or are replaying this afternoon’s Zoom meeting in your mind, the comforting heaviness will allow you to truly switch off.
Our favourite is by Eve Sleep, because not only does it tick all of our cosiness boxes, but it’s aesthetically pleasing too!
Use the 4-7-8 technique
No tools required.
As you lay in bed, simply breathe in for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds and then breathe out for 8 seconds. The process of counting will make this practice all the more mindful, as the power of breath works its wonders.
Trust us, you’ll be dozing off in no time! This is a firm favourite at Team Verdant Alchemy and we’ve seen amazing results.
The final piece of the phenomenal sleep puzzle
We couldn’t write anything about sleep without also acknowledging the power of magnesium: Your new best friend if you struggle to nod off!
Evidence suggests that this mineral improves shut eye for several reasons. Firstly, it plays a big part in converting protein into the chemicals that actually make you feel sleepy. On top of that, it calms your nervous system down and relaxes the muscles. That means that your body will be more prepared to sleep and that you’re likely to feel considerably more rested when you wake up.
Most of us (especially women) are deficient in magnesium, which is why it has such an impact on our sleep patterns. Diet obviously plays a massive role in this and we recommend
